KUALA LUMPUR: Ali Akbar Othman's paintings are a definite attention-grabber, thanks to their fluorescent hues.

About 30 paintings from his Lanskap Malaya series -- all of which pay homage to traditional wooden houses -- are on display at Balai Seni New Straits Times Press, 31, Jalan Riong, Bangsar here.
The backdrop for most of Ali's paintings are multi-coloured hills which are symbolic of the diversity of Malaysia.
The 52-year-old Malacca- born artist, who started dabbling in a relatively new form of art called "naive art", said he was one of the few serious naive artists in Malaysia.
Naive art is an art form characterised by its simplicity through the strong use of patterns and raw colours.
"Naive art has not really made it to mainstream art in Malaysia yet but I'm hoping this will change within the next 10 years."
Ali said he discovered this art form through his mentor, naive art master Yusof Gajah, whom he met two years ago.
"He told me to try dabbling in naive art."
I researched the form on the Internet and then tried it out. It was like a duck taking to water for me.
"However, I have to say that naive art is not easy as it has to be within you and you can't force yourself to get involved in it."
Through his first solo exhibition which started last Monday, Ali is attempting to promote his style in the local art scene.
His paintings, which are exhibited daily from 10am to 6pm until Dec 26, are also on sale. Those who are interested can call him on 017-669 5659.
Admission is free.
**TAHNIAH DARI KAMI, OTHMANIANS. Semoga sentiasa berkat semua usaha abg.**
